FRENCH ONION SOUP: This is a classic never-order on-a-first-date dish. While tasty, French onion soup is challenging to eat because of the dense, seemingly impenetrable layer of cheese on top. Usually, you are given only a soupspoon with which to work. To break through the cheese, press the side of the spoon against the inside of the bowl (with the cheese wedged between the two). While there are actually special cheese knives for eating French onion soup, few establishments keep these on hand. In the vast majority of situations, you are on your own with the spoon. While you may be tempted to use your dinner knife, refrain from doing so.
